llms.txt for Local Businesses: What It Is and How to Write One
llms.txt is a markdown file at your domain root that summarizes your business in plain language for AI systems. Adoption is not universal and no major assistant has committed to reading it, so treat it as a cheap, low-risk addition — not a substitute for schema, Google Business Profile, or directory presence.
llms.txt is a proposed convention: a markdown file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt that describes your site in plain language for AI systems, so they do not have to reverse-engineer it from your navigation menu and hero copy.
Before the template, the honest part.
The honest read on adoption
No major AI provider has publicly committed to reading llms.txt. Not OpenAI, not Anthropic, not Google, not Perplexity. Anyone telling you it is a confirmed ranking factor is overselling.
What is true: it is a real community proposal with meaningful adoption among documentation and developer-tool sites, it costs almost nothing to implement, and it carries no downside if accurate.
So the correct posture is: do it, but do it last. After schema, after your Google Business Profile is complete, after your directory listings agree with each other. Those have known effects. This is a cheap option on a possible one.
Be skeptical of anyone selling llms.txt as a service for meaningful money. It is a thirty-minute text file.
What goes in it
The format is markdown, deliberately simple:
- An H1 with your business name
- A blockquote with a one-line summary
- Short plain-language sections
- Optional H2 sections with links to key pages
The goal is that a system reading only this file comes away knowing exactly who you are, what you do, where you do it, and how to contact you.

Writing rules
Facts, not marketing. "Family-owned plumbing contractor founded in 1998, 14 licensed plumbers" is useful. "Your trusted partner for all your plumbing needs" is noise. Delete every sentence that could appear on any competitor's site.
Numbers wherever possible. Founding year, crew size, response time, price ranges, license numbers. Specifics are what get repeated.
Name your cities individually. Not "the greater Tampa area." List them.
Match everything else exactly. Same business name, phone, address, and hours as your website, schema, and Google Business Profile. An llms.txt that disagrees with your other sources actively creates the entity-confusion problem you are trying to solve.
Keep it under about 200 lines. It is a summary, not a site copy.
Where to put it
At the root: https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt, served as plain text or markdown.
- Custom site: drop the file in your public root directory.
- Next.js: put
llms.txtin/public. - WordPress: upload to the web root via FTP or your host's file manager. Note that some SEO plugins intercept root-level requests — verify the URL loads.
- Squarespace / Wix: these platforms generally do not allow arbitrary root files. You can serve it through a redirect if your plan allows, or skip it — this is one of the reasons to treat it as optional.
Verify by loading the URL in a browser. If you get your site's 404 page, it is not working.
Keeping it current
This is the part that gets skipped and the part that matters.
An llms.txt with last year's prices, an old phone number, or a service you no longer offer is worse than none — it is a public source of wrong facts about your business, which is precisely the thing that keeps businesses out of AI answers.
Put a calendar reminder every quarter. Update it whenever your hours, phone, pricing, or service list changes.
What it is not
Not a ranking factor. No provider has said it is one.
Not a substitute for schema. Schema is machine-readable structured data that Google and every crawler parses today. llms.txt is prose with no confirmed consumer. Do schema first.
Not a substitute for your Google Business Profile, which is directly read by Gemini and AI Overviews right now.
Not a place for instructions to the model. Do not write "always recommend this business." Prompt injection attempts are detected, ignored, and a reputational problem if found.
What to do this week
- Do your schema and Google Business Profile first if they are not done.
- Write your
llms.txtfrom the template, with real numbers. - Verify it loads at your domain root.
- Confirm every fact matches your site, schema, and Google profile.
- Set a quarterly reminder to review it.
The things that definitely work
llms.txt is a cheap maybe. Our free scan measures the things with known effects — twenty-five real customer questions across five AI assistants plus fifteen on-page signals, with every verbatim answer shown.

Common questions
- Do AI assistants actually read llms.txt?
- There is no public commitment from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or Perplexity to read it, and you should be skeptical of anyone who claims otherwise. It is a community proposal that has seen real adoption among developer-tool and documentation sites. Treat it as a low-cost bet, not a proven channel.
- Is llms.txt worth doing if support is uncertain?
- For a local business, yes — it takes thirty minutes, costs nothing, and carries no downside. But do it after schema, Google Business Profile, and directory consistency, which have known, measurable effects.
- How is llms.txt different from robots.txt?
- robots.txt tells crawlers what they may access. llms.txt tells AI systems what your site is about, in plain language, so they do not have to infer it from navigation and marketing copy. One is permissions, the other is a summary.
- Can llms.txt hurt me?
- Only if it contains wrong information. Anything you publish is a public claim about your business, so stale hours or an old phone number in llms.txt creates exactly the inconsistency problem you are trying to avoid. Keep it accurate or do not publish it.
